The Agency

Stanislaus Community Assistance Project (SCAP) is a non-profit, 501c3 social service agency. We provide supportive services to people living and coping with life threatening illness. SCAP has been in operation since 1986 and is a United Way affiliate.

Our Mission

The Stanislaus Community Assistance Project is dedicated to improving the health & well-being of underserved individuals in Stanislaus County by:

  • Enhancing access to quality medical and social support services.

  • Empowering individuals through education.

  • Promoting understanding and sensitivity toward people with health problems in our community.

Hand-to-Hand Program

The Hand-to-Hand Program has been around since 1986. The program provides one-to-one emotional and practical support to clients as they live and cope with serious illness. Some examples are: cancer, heart disease, HIV/AIDS, COPD, and Diabetes (just to name a few).

A unique feature of the program is that clients are matched one-on-one with specially trained volunteers. We pay special attention to the interests and needs of a potential client and match her/him with a volunteer who possesses skills in these areas.

To support our volunteerism we offer weekly interaction with a volunteer coordinator, bi-monthly support groups, follow-up calls, and ongoing training.

There are five programs within the Hand-to-Hand Program. They are:

1.Survivor's Network of Volunteers
  • Have first-hand experience with the disease or illness of the person with whom they are matched.

  • Know what it is like to battle a serious illness-and win.

  • Support their client "match" through tough times and help them thrive during good times.

2."Handi-Helper" Volunteers
  • Assist their client "Match" at home by helping with chores such as cleaning, doing laundry, cooking, shopping or running errands.

3."Good Friend" Volunteer
  • Listen, provide companionship, and encourage their client "match" as she/he copes with living with a life threatening illness.

4."Caring Friend" Volunteer
  • Visit clients in the hospital.

  • Provide companionship, friendship, and a "listening ear" during hospitalization. For example:

  • For children, these volunteers may put on a puppet show or play a board game.

  • For adult clients, read a book or just "be there" for conversation.

5."Phone Support" Volunteer
  • Make daily or weekly phone calls to clients.

  • Make sure each client is receiving the help she/he need and make arrangements for additional support upon client request.

We currently have around 40 volunteers in the Hand-to-Hand Program and are growing. "Special" skills are not necessary to be a Hand-to-Hand volunteer. However, we do search for people with caring spirits and big hearts.
