Caring and Compassion: The Community Hospice Difference.
By Harold A. Peterson III, Chief Executive Officer
"No one wants to face the fact that they are going to die, especially if they know that it may be within the next six months. Denial, according to Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, is one of the 5 stages of death and dying. Asking hospice to help often means admitting to something very painful and very difficult to admit. So why call Community Hospice?
Hospice is about quality of life, support of patient and family, and being pain and symptom free. This is the Community Hospice difference. Calling in hospice to help does not mean you will immediately die. Many times we have found that just by stabilizing a terminal situation, the patient lives longer than expected. We don't offer a cure, but are proud of the fact that we can make this kind of difference in someone's life. It is a great outcome for us when we are able to discharge someone who was previously considered close to death.
Another Community Hospice difference is the lengths to which we will go to keep the patient comfortable. When it comes to administering extensive comfort care to patients with significant pain, hospice professionals go above and beyond the call of duty. We have had young patients who are dying of cancer and, because of their age, the cancer progresses at a rate that causes their pain to be much more severe. These patients need an unbelievable amount of medication just to keep them comfortable, yet still cognizant of their families and surroundings. The cost of care for these patients is sometimes more than five times what we are reimbursed, but the Community Hospice difference means, regardless of cost, we will continue to provide compassionate care.
Hospice is also about caring for families and loved ones long after the loss of a loved one. The Community Hospice difference makes bereavement support available for anyone who may be suffering a loss with eight different specialized groups. In one week, we have had as many as 175 people here receiving this support.
The Community Hospice Difference means that we will be there for you and your family in your greatest hours of need."
