Stockton had its origin in the California Gold Rush when it served as the staging area for miners coming upriver from San Francisco heading for the Mother Lode country.
Later, the City became the focal point for agribusiness of the San Joaquin Valley. The rich farm land supports agriculture as varied as tomatoes, asparagus, and more recently, thousands of acres of wine grapes. More recent years have brought a variety of businesses to the area.
The City of Stockton, with a population of 243,700, offers a unique blend of rural and urban qualities. The busy inland port is the entrance to the San Joaquin Delta, a series of waterways and agricultural islands leading to the San Francisco Bay. The county seat and financial center of San Joaquin County, Stockton has become one of the fastest developing manufacturing, warehousing, and distribution centers in California.
Because of the Central Valley location, Stockton attracts a wide range of business and recreational activities, offering boating, fishing, water skiing, sailing, and fine restaurants catering to water sports enthusiasts. A variety of art, music, theatre, dance, and literary events are held at San Joaquin Delta College and the University of the Pacific. Major theatre organizations draw audiences and participants from throughout the country.
In 1999, the City of Stockton was designated an All-America City by the National Civic League. The National Civic League is a 105-year old national nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to strengthening citizen democracy by transforming democratic institutions. Each year, the National Civic League receives applications from approximately 100 cities from across the country for this pretigious recognition. The City of Stockton received the All-America City Award for work the community has done to create new jobs, reduce crime, improve the Delta's environment, and revitalize the downtown area. These accomplishments were a result of cooperative efforts by Stockton citizens, community leaders, and government working together to improve the quality of life in our city. It is with great pride that the City of Stockton carries the title of All-America City.
